Rand Fishkin: Inbound Marketing for Startups

Months ago, we asked HackersandFounders.com members what problems they had with their startups. "How to get traction" was one of the biggest problems we heard back. We reached out to the best person we thought would be able to help: Rand Fiskin, Founder of SEOMoz.org. It was a delight.

Rand Fishkin, one of the world's top experts on online inbound marketing, and founder of SEOMoz.org talks about marketing for startups.

  2. I go to a lot of these events since moving from Seattle.

Rand's presentation, one of the best I've seen. I'd even call it entertaining. Yes, that's right- I said it!

  4. Always great to start with a story. The rewards of inbound marketing will always trump those of paid marketing. I think the appropriate selection and optimization of inbound channels, along with great content, are great places to start. Great talk, Rand.

  7. Bummed I missed this in person. Been reading SEOMoz.org since 2005 - thought I'd quickly brief thru this before bed tonight... and stayed up to watch it in its entirety. Great info, very engaging. Thanks Rand.

  11. Amazing thanks Rand!! So much content out there for start-ups but it's not often you see this type of quality and hands on tips, really awesome mate! (p.s. tweeted but can't see a direct tweet button; )

  13. Great presentation as always from Rand Fishkin.

I've been looking at using Wistia as a video platform for better inbound marketing & SEO, so was good to see this talked about again. Thanks for uploading.

  14. Awesome presentation. Will be trying out the 10 points Rand laid out on our site. Love presentations where they give real life examples and successes instead of just telling you what you 'should' do.

  15. Awesome video.
Not so awesome video player. It loads the video from start even if you want to play only the second half :(
AND submitting this comment reloads the page...Aaargh :(

  16. This is a truly inspiring session from Rand packed with a lot of useful information.

  17. Noting down important points from Rand gave me a Google Doc full of notes to work through. Even SEOMoz is a great success story of Inbound Marketing. The brand value associated with SEOmoz is largely due to its blog's popularity than due to the SEO software it sells. Hope my start up SEO Corporation replicate the same kind of success with Rand's great ideas.

  18. I didn't realize Rand was such a great speaker. I've only seen him before on Whiteboard Fridays.

Greg Caughill, 3 years, 5 months ago.

  19. Feel really good that I stumbled on this presentation.
Inbound marketing is something I am concentrating on creating and using good content for my own online marketing business and for my startup ideas.

It was also good to understand SEOmoz's history as i wasnt aware of that before.

  20. Very useful, thanks for sharing. Rand seems to have a rare combination of knowledge and integrity.

Eric Wittenberg, 3 years, 4 months ago.

  21. One of the best presentations I have seen ever!! Thank you Rand. Cant wait to check out SEOMoZ now!

Prakruthi, 3 years, 4 months ago.

  22. I loved every minute of this. Combined motivational speech with the kind of in-depth knowledge and vision you could only get from Rand and his SEOmoz universe. I think we can and will use at least 5 of the tips he gave out four our startup.

Thanks hackersandfounders for putting this up for free!

  23. Very knowledgeable and pretty in depth view; there are underlying issues however for the other 90% of companies that don't have the ability to post great viral content as such creative effort is either rare and/or too expensive.

But then again, maybe these requirements will make current and future business owners adapt or die, giving us a better experience as a whole.

  24. Great presentation,
I was wondering how it all translates into the small business area though, sth like wedding photography...
still, good quality content seems to be the key-word regardless of the field you're in.

    Thanks for sharing, Rand :)

  25. Rand as always you deliver the best SEO & Marketing advice possible. Saw the video on SEOmoz and have to say I agree with the part where you have to do your marketing plan before having your product.

    Keep up the good work.

    Paweł Rabinek, 3 years ago.

  29. You don't get to see this everyday, great video.

Ryan Bradley, 2 years, 9 months ago.

  30. I hope I learned something useful.. Followerwonk is the only thing that made me stop the video and actually use it. I have build a online game recently and I am looking for methods to promote it. It's a wordsearch game for kids&adults and I want it to become the best wordsearch game on the Internet.
